Dongdaemun is where old and future Seoul collide. A 600-year-old city gate stands a few steps from a silver, spaceship-like building by Zaha Hadid; fashion malls sell clothes late into the night; and just west, Euljiro's ageing print shops have become one of the city's most interesting places to drink. It's also one of the fastest-growing areas for foreign visitors.

Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP)
Designed by Zaha Hadid and opened in 2014, DDP is a flowing, curved building with no straight edges, covered in thousands of aluminium panels. It's free to walk around and through.
- Exhibitions and design shops inside (some exhibitions are ticketed)
- Rooftop paths and grassy slopes that are great for photos
- Light shows on the building's facade during some seasons and festivals
- Dongdaemun History & Culture Park next door, with remains of the old city wall found during construction
The building is most photogenic at dusk, when the lights come on.

Fashion malls and night shopping

Dongdaemun has been Seoul's fashion wholesale hub for decades. Around DDP you'll find:
- Retail fashion malls β floors of small clothing, shoe and accessory shops, open late into the evening
- Wholesale buildings β aimed at shop owners, often busiest at night; some don't sell single items
- Fabric and accessory markets β endless buttons, ribbons and fabric, fascinating even if you're not buying
Heunginjimun and the city wall walk
Heunginjimun β the "Great East Gate" that gives Dongdaemun its name β is one of the original gates of the Seoul City Wall, dating back to the late 14th century (rebuilt in the 19th).
From the gate, a path follows the restored Seoul City Wall uphill to Naksan Park. It's a gentle 15β20 minute climb, and at the top you get a wide, free view over the city and N Seoul Tower. At night, with the lit wall snaking down the hill, it's one of the best free views in Seoul β and a spot that's become much more popular with visitors recently.

Where to eat
- Dakhanmari Alley β a small alley near Dongdaemun famous for dakhanmari: a whole chicken in a light broth, cooked at your table, with potatoes, rice cakes and noodles added at the end. Perfect for two to four people
- Gwangjang Market β about 10 minutes' walk west, for bindaetteok and yukhoe
- Late-night food around the fashion malls, for shoppers and workers

Euljiro: printing alleys and hidden bars

West of Dongdaemun, Euljiro was for decades a district of print shops, tile stores and small metal workshops. Many are still working during the day. At night, some upper floors and back alleys become cafΓ©s, wine bars and craft beer spots with no obvious sign β locals jokingly call the area "Hipjiro".
- Look up and in β many bars are on second or third floors, reached through workshop stairways
- Go after the workshops close, when the alleys fill with people
- Try a classic Euljiro "nogari" beer alley β outdoor tables, cheap beer and dried pollack snacks, especially lively in warm weather
A late-afternoon to night route

- 18:00 β Heunginjimun, then walk the city wall up to Naksan Park for sunset
- 19:30 β back down for dakhanmari
- 21:00 β fashion malls, or on to Euljiro for a drink
It's day 2 of our 2-day K-pop & nightlife plan β or build your own with the trip planner.
Ihwa Mural Village β visit quietly
On the far side of Naksan Park, Ihwa-dong became famous for murals painted on its steep lanes. It's a residential neighbourhood, and after years of crowds some residents removed murals in protest. If you walk through, do it the way you would in Bukchon: quietly, during the day, and without photographing people's homes up close. The views back over the city from the top of the lanes are the real highlight.

Our honest take
Dongdaemun isn't pretty in the traditional sense, but it's one of the most interesting parts of Seoul β big, busy, a little chaotic, and best at night.
Go if:
- You love architecture and night photography
- You want affordable fashion and a late-night shopping scene
- You're after a free city view (Naksan) and an easy evening walk
- You like hidden bars and neighbourhoods in transition
Skip if:
- You prefer calm, traditional areas β try Seochon instead
- You're not interested in shopping or nightlife
Our tip: arrive an hour before sunset, walk the city wall up to Naksan Park, and come down for dakhanmari. It's one of the best-value evenings in Seoul.
