Incheon International Airport sits on an island about an hour west of central Seoul. It's consistently ranked one of the best airports in the world, and getting into the city is easy whichever option you pick. The real question is which option fits your hotel, your luggage and your arrival time.

Option 1: AREX (Airport Railroad Express)

The airport railroad runs from both terminals into Seoul. There are two very different trains on the same tracks.

All-stop train (일반열차)

  • About 60 minutes to Seoul Station, stopping at Gimpo Airport, Hongik University (Hongdae), Gongdeok and more
  • Cheap — typically ₩4,000–5,000 depending on where you get off
  • Pay with a T-money card or buy a single-journey ticket at the machine
  • Connects to the regular subway at several stations, which is why it's the default choice

Express train (직통열차)

  • Non-stop to Seoul Station in about 45 minutes from Terminal 1
  • Reserved seats, more luggage space, roughly two to three times the price of the all-stop
  • Worth it if you're going straight to Seoul Station and want a guaranteed seat after a long flight

Tip: Hongdae is a direct stop on the all-stop train. If you're staying there, AREX is almost always the best option — no transfer, no traffic.

Option 2: Airport limousine bus

Coach buses run from both terminals to specific areas and hotel clusters across Seoul — Gangnam, Jamsil, Myeongdong, Itaewon, Dongdaemun and more — each on its own numbered route.

  • Drops you close to many hotels, with far less walking than the train
  • Luggage goes underneath; reclining seats
  • Roughly ₩17,000–18,000 at time of writing
  • Buy tickets at the counters or kiosks in arrivals, or pay by card on board
  • Much slower when Seoul traffic is bad (weekday evenings especially)

Ask the ticket counter which route stops nearest your hotel — give them the hotel name or show the address in Korean.

Option 3: Taxi

Taxi stands are well organised, with separate queues for regular and "deluxe" (black) taxis. Expect somewhere around ₩60,000–100,000 to central Seoul, depending on the destination, the time of night and tolls.

Taxis make sense when:

  • You land after the trains and buses have stopped (roughly midnight)
  • You're a group of three or four with lots of luggage, splitting the fare
  • You're traveling with small kids and just want to get there

Use the official taxi rank or Kakao T — never go with someone who approaches you inside the terminal. How to set up and use Kakao T is in our apps guide.

Landing at Gimpo instead?

Some flights from Japan, China and domestic routes land at Gimpo Airport, which is much closer — about 20–30 minutes from central Seoul on the AREX, subway Line 5 or Line 9. If you have a choice of flights, Gimpo saves real time.

What to do in the arrivals hall first

  1. Activate your eSIM or pick up your USIM (see eSIM vs. USIM)
  2. Get a T-money card at the convenience store if you'll take the all-stop train
  3. Change a small amount of cash — just enough for the first day (why)
  4. Then head down to the trains or out to the buses

Landing late at night

Flights that land after about 10:30pm are where most arrival plans fall apart. By the time you've cleared immigration and collected your bags, the last trains may have gone.

  • Check the last departures before you fly. The last AREX trains and most limousine bus routes wind down around midnight. Look up the times for your terminal, not just "the airport".
  • Some bus routes run late. A handful of routes keep going later into the night — ask at the bus counter as soon as you land.
  • Taxi or ride-hail. After the last train, a taxi from the official rank or Kakao T is the reliable option. Split it if you're travelling with others.
  • Sleep at the airport. Both terminals have transit hotels and capsule-style rooms, which are worth considering if you land very late and have an early start.

Travelling with heavy luggage

Seoul's subway is excellent, but it wasn't designed for two large suitcases. Transfer stations can involve long corridors and the occasional staircase without a lift.

  • Luggage delivery. Counters in the arrivals hall can send your bags straight to your hotel while you travel light. Book on arrival; prices depend on bag size.
  • Pick the no-transfer route. If your hotel is on the AREX line (Hongdae, Gongdeok, Seoul Station), the train is easy. If not, the limousine bus is usually less work than two subway transfers.
  • Look for the lift icon. Naver Map shows elevators at stations. It's worth checking your exit before you arrive.
  • Groups of five or more can ask for a larger "jumbo" taxi at the rank.

Getting back to the airport

Plan the trip out with more margin than the trip in.

  • Allow 60–90 minutes from central Seoul, more at weekday rush hour if you're taking the bus.
  • Arrive at the airport about three hours before an international flight. Incheon is efficient but big, and check-in, security and tax-refund queues all add up.
  • Claim tax refunds before security. Keep the items and receipts handy — see our Myeongdong guide for how refunds work.
  • Spend or change your last won before you go through; won coins are rarely accepted for exchange abroad.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use the Climate Card from the airport?

Not on the express train. The airport area is outside the pass's covered zone, so it's simplest to use a T-money card or a single ticket for this one ride and start your pass the next morning.

When is the last train from the airport?

Services wind down around midnight. If your flight lands late, check the last AREX and bus departures for your terminal before you fly.

Is the limousine bus comfortable after a long flight?

Yes — full-size coaches with reclining seats and underneath luggage storage. Many people nap the whole way.

Which terminal am I at?

Check your airline. Korean Air and its partners mostly use Terminal 2; many other airlines use Terminal 1. Both have AREX stations and bus stops.
